Matthew Taylor Ms. Cowburn AP Language 12 June 2017 Violent Media and The Aggressive Generation It Has Established The creation of visual and active forms of media has caused debate and discussion over the effects it has on the brain. The effects of media on the brain are of concern regarding children specifically, as their minds are still developing. Questions of the severity and impact have intrigued parents, scientists, and lawmakers. The first committee on this issue, the Surgeon Generals Scientific Advisory Committee on Television and Social Behavior, was created in 1969 to answer these questions. The constant subjection of youth to video games by advertisers and their peers, has caused a new generation to not condemn violence but to praise it, it has led those who once aspired to be heroes to aspire to be the criminal. This may be the result of instant gratification and reward when committing a violent act such as a murder in a video-game, ââ¬Å"Equally troubling, video games often present violence in a glamorized light. Typical games cast players in the role of a shooter, with points scored for each kill.â⬠, according to the Senate Committee on the Judiciary. Children learn and imitate through observation, in addition, the media plays a huge role in shaping public attitudes. This combination and ââ¬Å"repeated exposure to violence in the media places children at risk for: increases in aggression; desensitization to acts of violence.
